Lens Rock – Accommodative Rock

Purpose: To help improve the ability to quickly and accurately shift eye focusing through a wide range

Apparatus: Lens holder with training lenses and easy reading (one or two year below present reading level if necessary).

Method:

Patient is instructed as follows:

PLUS LENS ROCK

1. Place the plus lens holder in front of the eyes, with one lens covered.

2. Reading material is held at the farthest distance at which it is still clear through the plus lenses.

3. Read two lines of print through the lens.  Raise the lens holder, keeping the other eye covered at all times, and read two lines of print without the lens.

4. Reverse the occluder and repeat for equal time with the other eye.

5. When possible, move the print farther away while still keeping it clear.

6. Remove the occluder and repeat using both eyes.

MINUS LENS ROCK

1. Place the minus lens holder in front of eyes, with one lens covered.

2. Hold reading material at a normal reading distance.  If the print is not clear at the distance through the minus lens, slowly move the print farther away until it is just clear.

3. Read two lines of print through the lens.  Raise the lens holder, keeping the other eye covered at all times, and read two lines of print without lens.

4. Reverse the occluder and repeat for an equal time with the other eye.

5. When possible, move the print closer, but no closer than six inches from the eyes.

6. Remove the occluder and repeat using both eyes.

Aspects to be Emphasized:

1. Strive for instantaneous clearing of print.

2. Attempt to increase reading distance through the plus lenses and decrease the reading distance through the minus lenses.

3. Awareness of size and distance changes of the print as the lenses are lowered and raised.

4. Measure reading distance each day for the plus and for the minus lenses.

5. Awareness of first blur at farthest reading distance with plus lens and nearest reading distance with minus lenses.
