Poker Chip Coding

PURPOSE: To develop visually oriented auditory-motor rhythm

APPARATUS: Several poker chips of two different colors

METHOD:

1. Patient is told that one color is to represent a long sound and the other color and short sound.

2. Arrange the chips to represent a pattern of “long” and “short” sounds.

3. Patient is asked to perform in several different ways:

a. Looking at the chips and producing the pattern with his voice, harmonica and/or code oscillator.

b. Touching the chips with his finger and holding it a longer time on the “long” colors and a shorter time on the “short” colors.

c. Touching the chips and matching short and long touching of the chips with short and long sounds with his voice (or harmonica).

d. Touching the chips in synchrony with the voice of the home assistant, who is sounding out the pattern.

ASPECTS TO BE EMPHASIZED:

1. Ability to see the pattern and match it with his own voice.

2. Ability to see the pattern and match it by touching the chips.

3. Ability to match the pattern by touching the chips in synchrony with the assistant’s voice.

4. Ability to match the pattern by touching the chips in synchrony with the sound pattern of his own voice.
