Bar Reading

Purpose:  To encourage binocular information processing.

Materials:  Reading material, a pencil or a 6-inch rule (bar)

Method:

1.  Patient is instructed to hold a pencil or a 6-inch rule midway between self and reading material, on midline.  The pencil should cover up a vertical line of print seen by each eye, as he closes first one eye, then the other.

2.  With both eyes open, all print should now be seen. One eye “fills in” for the other.

3.  He is to read like this three or four times a day for three to five minute periods.

Aspects to be emphasized:

1. Be aware of reading through two “ghosts” of the pencil or ruler.
