PARQUETRY – PHASE 2

PURPOSE: To explore various modes of information processing and communications as they relate to visualization of geometric patterns

APPARATUS: Parquetry blocks, cookie tin, play dough, paper and pencil

METHOD:

1. Assistant should construct a parquetry block model using three, four or more blocks on table.  Have child manipulate and match the pattern under cover so that he can feel, but not see, the pattern he is creating.

2. Construct a parquetry block model under cover, so that the child can feel it, but not see it.  Have him reproduce the pattern on the table top so that it looks like the pattern he feels.  If the block pattern under cover is constructed on a cookie tin with play dough on it, the design will stay in place better while the child feels it.

3. Using drawings of three, four or more parquetry blocks in various patterns, have child reproduce the drawn patterns with parquetry blocks under cover, by feel.

4. Construct a pattern of parquetry blocks.  Have child draw the pattern on paper–the same size.  Increase the difficulty of the task by creating more complex patterns to be drawn.

5. Give child verbal instructions to place blocks in specific ways and patterns.

6. Have child describe a pattern telling someone else how to construct it.

7. Give some simple written instructions to make a pattern.

8. Have child write instructions as to how to make a pattern for someone else to construct.

ASPECTS TO BE EMPHASIZED:

1. Accuracy and speed of tactile manipulation.

2. Skill in duplicating patterns by and from drawings.

3. Ability to follow and give verbal instructions.

4. Ability to follow and give written instructions.
