Face of Clock Fixations

Purpose:  To develop accuracy of saccadic movements in the near visual area

Apparatus: Two small fixation targets (pen and pencil, two different coins, etc.), balance board

Method:

Horizontal Saccadic Fixations–At Near Area

1. The two targets are held 12 to 24 inches apart in the horizontal plane.  Direct patient’s attention to one target, then the other, then back, etc.  Vary the separation of the targets.

2.  In directing fixations from one target to the other, make it a command.  Snap it out!  Make your commands (a) in rhythm and (b) out of rhythm.

3. Watch for inaccurate fixations requiring corrective movement of the eyes, such as undershooting, overshooting or looping.

4. Posture should be erect, standing on balance board.

Vertical Saccadic Fixations–At Near Area

1. The two targets are held 12 to 24 inches apart in the vertical plane.

2. Otherwise, same as horizontal fixations.

Angle Saccadic Fixations–At Near Area

1. The two targets are held 12 to 24 inches apart in the oblique planes.

2. Otherwise, same as horizontal fixations.

Aspects to be Emphasized:

1. Watch for inaccurate fixations requiring corrective eye movements, such as undershooting, overshooting, looping.

2. Watch for anticipatory movements.

3. Self awareness of inaccurate or corrective movements.

4. Proficiency in handling rhythmic and out of rhythm commands in all directions.

5. Ability to maintain balance on balance board.
