Rapid Reading

Purpose: To increase reading speed and comprehension.

Materials: Reading material, good lighting and seating.

Procedure:

Part I

1.  Select a book of no interest to you, but within your level of comprehension.

2.  Sit in a comfortable reading posture with good light.

3.  Move your eyes across the lines of print as fast as you can without regard to the meaningfulness of the print.

4.  Use the index finger of your preferred hand to guide your eye movements across the line of print, in the beginning.

5.  When use of the finger begins to hinder, rather than aid, the movements, drop the use of finger and proceed with eyes alone.

6.  As time goes on, you will become aware of pursuing two or more lines simultaneously.  Don’t force this, just let it emerge.

7.  As the days progress and you have more and more experience wit this procedure, you will begin to comprehend the information your were exposed to in performing this technique.

8.  When this occurs, you are ready to start Part II.

Part II

1.  Continue the above described procedure, but begin to count out loud rhythmically from one to eight as your move your eyes across the lines of print.

2.  Continue this repetitively.

3.  Revert to use of index finger to guide and stabilize your eye movement, as in Part I.

4.  Drop out use of guiding index finger when it begins to hinder eye movement.

5.  In time, you should become aware of uananticipated comprehension.

6.  Continue this activity to further improve comprehension.

Aspects to be emphasized:

1.  Make no effort whatsoever to read the material – simply move your eyes across the lines of print.

2.  Be sure you have no interest in the reading material.

3.  Be sure the reading material is within your comprehension level.

4.  Consistantly practice daily for a minimum of five minutes to a maximum of 10 minutes.
